Girl Scouts Visit HMNS - March 24th, 2018

Alex's troop visits the Houston Museum of Natural Science as the azaleas are in bloom at the front entrance

Alex & Evie find a statue of Oliver while geocaching near the Outdoor Theater

Continue looking for geocaches among the skirted trees

The clue is a big bear that Alex clues us in toward

The troop poses with the trojan bear at the park

Take a couple poses with our found geocache location

The zoo's mini train makes an appearance

The tracks are almost close enough to touch the bear

Enjoy lunch at the park before heading back to class at the musuem

We follow the aligned planets back into the HMNS

A stegosaurus points out the way to the underground classrooms

The girls take in a flight similar in the main lobby

This one simulates your flying as if you were a bird

Maybe get a photo with the velociraptor later

Horseshoe crab points the way to the classrooms

The troop attends a forensics/detective class at HMNS

They are joined by at least three other troops today

Go out looking for clues in the basement among the Apollo artifacts

The clue leads us into the main lobby with the flying fish above

The Foucault Pendulum is a visual demonstration of the Earth's rotation

It also hides the next clue for the troop to continue on

Move into the main lobby with all the large reconstructed dinosaurs

Triceratops is looking fine

The plant eaters just want to enjoy their salad in peace

Peggy taunts the velociraptor

Now you're in trouble . . . run away!

The Tyrannosaurus Rex has a good laugh from it

Thanks for the laugh but not I got to go get lunch

Pterodactyls have a seat and plan their next flight

The big ones are hard to capture in one shot

The woolly mammoth has finally stopped shedding

Pass throught the dinosaurs and find ancient egypt

The egyptians were more symmetrical and very colorful

The scouts find a third clue among the egyptian artifacts

The scouts depart the past and move toward the present

Yes, the elephant is not the place to look for the next clue

Descend the stairs to the 2nd level for an equal level view of the fish

Look for the next clue among the fancy gems

This might be turquoise but not sure

Wish I took photos of the nameplates now

A big honking amethyst here

3 different gems with 3 different colors

Unbelievably vivid purple

It is a frozen glass of water . . . maybe?

This is definately gold and much different from pyrite

The final clue tells us to head back to the classroom

Duck your head near the giant squid

Back in class, the girls look for differences in 2 similar images

Find and record the six clues the girls found on their quest

The girls find the differences in two different images

Alex encrypts a message with her paper cypher

The girls encrypt messages and then decrypt them

They gather around the instructor to learn how test substances

They then write descriptions of their known substances

They are corn starch, sugar, salt and baking soda

Evie & Kaitlyn write down unique identifiers of each substance

How does it look, feel and react with water or vinegar?

Salt and baking soda are whiter than sugar and corn starch!

Each scout gets a certificate at the end of class and a patch later

The troop poses with a museum celebrity

Mya, Katie, Abby, Alex, Evie and Kaitlyn had fun at HMNS today

Katie starts the individual poses with the velociraptor

Kaitlyn rejoins the troop after a busy soccer season

Abby pokes him right in the eye

Evie poses with a helping hand on her shoulder

Mya poses arm in arm with her new friend

Alex agrees that the altoid really freshened up his breath

No more poses until moral improves!
