First time team Swingers got a rude welcome to wednesday mixed league as steam rolling Major Woody only got out four times in four straight run ruled innings and the first official run ruled mixed softball game witnessed by 10 year veterans of Gilruth softball. New comers Deanna, Lisa, Scott, and Troy showed their mettle giving promise to the new Major Woody lineup. Former player Mark, now on TBD, watched from the sideline as James/TBD was brought in for two innings until Troy arrived. Mark was traded during the offseason in a puzzling maneuver reminiscent of the Astros Carl Everett becoming the Red Sox Carl Everett. The new look Woody's put up their greatest offensive performance in 6 seasons and only gave up one two base walk while receiving nine bases in return. Dave got to put in an easy 3 up, 3 down inning at first base while Scott pitched. Debbie Injury Report: Hit in head by thrown ball while running to third for triple - minor concussion / out-of-body experience.

Major Woody squared up early this season with its arch-nemesis Hooch and left them on the life time Schneid, 0-10. First inning fireworks for both teams as David made the only out for both teams, luckily a run scored for the SAC. David's usual target, Karen, made the catch. MW clamped down the rest of the evening and put in a final run ruled inning to seal the game. MW now has 6 run-ruled innings in 8 played for the season. Crash and Kevin supplied their usual offensive firepower and Donna added to the mix with a hard line drive up the middle for a hit. David gave up no walks giving MW a 13 base taken for 2 given ratio for the year. David's career walked base ratio is now 29 given for 194 bases taken by the team. Both teams adjourned to Tom's for a wild hot tub party. Debbie Injury Report: Knocked down running to first in collision with pitcher making the play - slight disorientation. Deanna had a leg muscle tighten up after her first hit which limited her running the rest of the game.

The Woody's got down to business and dueled early with a good team that had never beaten them. The fourth inning proved decisive when MW killed the time with a run-ruled inning. MW has yet to play a 5th inning in 3 games and now have 7 run-ruled innings out of 12 played. Crash continues his Huffman-esque transformation by committing no errors at short and leads the team in all batting stats. David gave up no walks giving MW a 25 base taken for 2 given ratio for the season. David's career walked base ratio is now 29 given for 206 bases taken by the team (more than 7 to 1). Debbie Injury Report: Almost hit in head by high foul ball landing in the bleachers while rehydrating - slight spillage.

The outlook wasn't brilliant for Major Woody that day;
The score stood eight to five with but one inning more to play.
And then when Patricia died at first, and Kathy did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast:
They thought if only David could but get a whack at that,
They'd put up even money now, with David at the bat.

Then from five or ten throats or more there rose a mighty yell,
It rumbled in the valley and it rattled on the dell,
It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled on the flat,
For David, mighty David, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in David's manner as he stepped up to his place,
There was pride in David's bearing and a smile on David's face,
And when the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance gleamed in David's eye; a sneer curled David's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere comes hurtling through the air,
And David stands a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped--
"That ain't my style," said David. "Strike one," the umpire said.

"Fraud!" cried the maddened crowd of ten, and echo answered fraud,
But one scornful look from David and the audience was awed;
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that David wouldn't let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from David's lip, his teeth are clenched in hate,
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate;
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of David's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy for Major Woody--mighty David has struck out!

Major Woody defeated Practice Anyone with good defense. In the first inning, our opponents led off with a double and a single but still scored no runs. The inning highlight had David fielding a one out, bases loaded, hit ball by a guy to the mound, back to Donna for the force at home. This is the first force out at home in recent memory mostly because David usually cowers from guy hit balls. Lisa put the exclamation point on defense for the game with two double play throws from second to first! Donna's enthusiasm for the game crept ever higher as Scott's bat provided yet another outfield blast by the sudden-slugger catcher. Donna is currently boasting a career high season batting average of .556. Her October birthday gift will be easy to determine . . . a loaded 23 oz. bat. Kevin continues to amaze with his astronomical slugging average and Troy beat out his first in-the-park homerun. David gave up no walks giving MW a 32 base taken for 2 given ratio for the season. Scott put in a no walk 6th inning, freeing up David to take some PHOTOS. David's career walked base ratio is now 29 given for 213 bases taken by the team. Debbie Injury Report: Although Debbie was not at the game, she may have suffered a fall, bump or bruise where ever she may have been.

It took a total team effort for Major Woody to succumb to the Outcast. Key errors in the fourth allowed a run-ruled inning and key outs on our part prevented runs for the Major from being scored. An absolute lack of extra-base hits can be attributed to former teammate Mark playing right field for the Outcast who threw out two Woodites advancing to 2nd. Mark showed some pity by flying out every time he bat. David almost hit a homerun-K (see photos) but blue called it foul. It was right on the left field foul pole. Only highlight of the game has Donna continuing to shine in her best season ever. David gave up one walk giving MW a 33 base taken for 3 given ratio for the season. David's career walked base ratio is now 30 given for 214 bases taken by the team. Debbie Injury Report: Suffered serious disappointment for not chalking up the W for this game - consumed beer.
